Gearbox Optimisation – TCU Tuning for Automatic Transmissions

Removing the torque limit in the transmission control unit and adapting shift times and clutch pressures – so your Stage 1 gains fully reach the road.

More power needs a gearbox that keeps up: with gearbox optimisation (TCU tuning) we remove the torque limit in the transmission control unit and match shift behaviour and clutch pressures to your new power.

What is the TCU?

On cars with an automatic or dual-clutch gearbox, a separate control unit – the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) – decides when and how to shift. It controls shift points, shift times, clutch and oil pressures and converter lock-up, and it monitors the torque coming from the engine.

The torque limit in the gearbox

From the factory the TCU stores a torque limit, sometimes only in certain gears. If the engine delivers more torque after a Stage 1, the TCU asks the engine ECU to reduce torque – and the extra power is cut exactly when you need it.

Why gearbox optimisation makes sense with Stage 1

For cars with an automatic gearbox we recommend TCU tuning with every Stage 1 and Stage 2. Only when engine and gearbox are matched to the same torque does the full gain reach the road, while adapted clutch pressures prevent slip, heat and wear.

What we adjust

 • Torque limit, raised to match the new engine output and the gearbox's capacity

 • Clutch and clamping pressures

 • Shift points and shift times for quicker, more direct gear changes

 • Converter lock-up and kickdown behaviour, depending on the gearbox

 • Depending on the car, launch rpm and manual-mode behaviour

How it works at PerformanceX

 • Diagnostics of gearbox and engine control units, fault memory, adaptation values and oil temperature.

 • Backup of the original software.

 • Calibration matched to your Stage 1 or Stage 2.

 • Test drive with data logging and runs on our MAHA AWD dyno.

TCU Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3

Just like engine tuning, gearbox optimisation comes in stages. The right stage depends on your engine output and on what the gearbox can handle.

 • TCU Stage 1 – matches a Stage 1 engine remap: raised torque limit, adapted clutch pressures, quicker shifts and smooth shift points for daily use. From €149 excl. VAT (€177.31 incl. VAT) as an add-on to Stage 1 or CPC tuning.

 • TCU Stage 2 – matches Stage 2 with hardware upgrades such as downpipe and intercooler: higher torque release, stronger clamping pressures, much quicker shifts in sport mode and launch control depending on the car. Price on request.

 • TCU Stage 3 – for high-performance builds such as turbo upgrades or engine builds: maximum torque release matched to the gearbox, sporty shift strategy and optimised launch functions. Gearbox upgrades may be advisable – we advise you beforehand. Price on request.

Which gearboxes?

Common automatic and dual-clutch gearboxes such as ZF 8HP, VW/Audi DSG / S tronic and Mercedes-Benz automatics. Many current Mercedes-AMG models also need CPC tuning. We check your car beforehand.
